Description
It is a new sub-speciality of ophthalmology to treat disfigured eyelids due to congenital malformations or tumours and trauma. Drooping of lids either from the birth of acquired in the later eye due to weakness of the levator muscles can be corrected bringing the lid height to a normal level. Entropion (in turning of lids) and Ectropion (Turned out lids) due to loss of elasticity of the lids due to old age can be corrected. Watering due to blockage of the draining of tears is corrected by Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). In young children, watery eyes can be treated by a simple procedure called probing under short anaesthesia.
Difference between readymade eye & custom eye-
The patient’s who have disfigured blind eyes can be fitted with custom made artificial eyes instead of ready-made eyes which can irritate the socket and produce more discharge subsequently leading to socket contracture.
Orbital tumour-
Tumours in the orbit can be treated by an oculoplastic surgeon without producing any external scar through the conjunctival route.
Thyroid eye disease-
Thyroid eye disease-producing lid retraction and proptosis can be treated by levator weakening procedures and fat decompression.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty gives your eyes a brighter and youthful by removal of excess fat and skin under the lids without any external scars.
Blepharo spasm-
Blepharo spasm or twitching of the muscles of the face can be treated by BOTOX injections. Botox injections can also be used to treat wrinkles to give a youthful look to the face.
Ptosis surgery in myopathy-
Frontalis sling surgery can be done in patient’s with burnt-out myasthenia and ocular myopathy to just lift the lids above the pupillary axis.
